BYK-Gardner cloud-runner is a mottling meter designed to objectively measure mottling (irregular lightness variations) on metallic and effect coatings. Mottling disturbs the overall color harmony of effect finishes and is most obvious on light metallics. The cloud-runner simulates visual evaluation under different observing angles and characterizes clouds/mottles by their size and visibility — providing objective and reliable values for QC and trouble shooting. Mottle chart for easy Pass/Fail analysis: data is analyzed by color with specific texture values (e.g., fine silver: approximately -4, coarse silver: around +3). An overall Mottle Index can be set to indicate Pass – Warning – Fail limits.
