Levelling/Sagging Applicator
Levelling/Sagging Applicator is a BYK-Gardner film applicator used to evaluate leveling and sagging properties of paints, coatings, varnishes, inks, and other liquid materials. This applicator helps users assess a coating’s ability to flow and level after application, while also evaluating its tendency to run, drip, or form sag on vertical surfaces.
In paint application testing, leveling and sag resistance are important parameters because both affect the final coating appearance. Good leveling helps reduce brush marks, roller marks, orange peel, and film unevenness. On the other hand, excessive sagging can cause streaks, tears, curtain effects, or non-uniform film thickness on vertical areas, edges, and corners.
Levelling/Sagging Applicator is used by creating multiple film stripes with different gap thicknesses on a test chart or substrate. For leveling tests, the panel is typically observed horizontally to see how well the film stripes merge or level out. For sagging tests, the panel is placed vertically to determine the highest film thickness that does not show excessive sag. This product is suitable for coating R&D, quality control, formulation comparison, batch comparison, paint development, and flow behavior evaluation according to ASTM D3730, ASTM D4400, and ASTM D4062 methods.
