Density Cup

Density Cup is a BYK-Gardner testing instrument used to measure density, specific gravity, or weight per volume of paints, coatings, lacquers, inks, varnishes, adhesives, resins, and other liquid materials. Density measurement is important in quality control because changes in material composition can produce density values that differ from the specified standard.

In testing with a Density Cup, the empty cup is weighed first, then filled with a liquid sample at the proper test temperature. After the cover is placed on the cup, excess sample is expelled through the small hole in the center of the cover to reduce the risk of air bubbles that may affect accuracy. The filled cup is then weighed again, and the density value is calculated based on sample weight and cup volume.

BYK-Gardner Density Cups are available in several volume and standard options, such as ISO Density Cup 50 ml and 100 ml, US Density Cup 83.2 ml, US Mini Cup 8.32 ml, and BSI Density Cup 100 ml. These products are made from stainless steel or corrosion-resistant steel to support durability, precision, and easy cleaning. Density Cups are suitable for paint quality control, coating formulation, batch comparison, raw material inspection, process validation, and density testing according to ASTM D333, ASTM D1475, ISO 2811, DIN 53217, and BS 3900-A19.
