Cylindrical Mandrel Tester
Cylindrical Mandrel Tester is a BYK-Gardner testing instrument used to evaluate coating flexibility, elongation, and adhesion under bending stress. This instrument helps users assess whether coatings, paints, varnishes, or protective layers can follow substrate deformation without cracking, flaking, or losing adhesion.
In cylindrical mandrel testing, a coated panel is bent over a cylindrical rod with a defined diameter. After bending, the coating surface is visually inspected for cracking, flaking, delamination, or other film damage. This method can be used as a pass/fail test with one specified mandrel size, or repeated using progressively smaller mandrels to determine the smallest diameter before coating failure occurs.
Cylindrical Mandrel Tester is available in ISO and ASTM versions to match different testing requirements. The ISO version uses a set of stainless steel mandrels with diameters of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25, and 32 mm, while the ASTM version uses rod diameters in inches. This instrument is suitable for architectural coatings, industrial coatings, automotive coatings, protective coatings, powder coatings, varnishes, coated metal panels, and materials requiring coating flexibility evaluation according to ASTM D522 and ISO 1519.
