Balanced Beam Adhesion/Mar Tester
Balanced Beam Adhesion/Mar Tester is a BYK-Gardner testing instrument used to evaluate scrape adhesion, mar resistance, and scratch hardness on coatings and other material surfaces. This instrument helps users differentiate the degree of coating adhesion to substrates while assessing surface resistance against scratches, mar, and mechanical damage caused by stylus contact.
In coating testing, adhesion and mar resistance are important parameters to ensure that the coating layer maintains reliable performance during use. Balanced Beam Adhesion/Mar Tester uses a balanced beam design with a 45° stylus holder, weight platform, counterweight, and sample bed mounted on ball bearings. This design allows test loads to be applied in a controlled manner to the stylus for more repeatable evaluation.
Balanced Beam Adhesion/Mar Tester is supplied with loop and needle styluses for scrape adhesion and mar resistance testing. Loads can be applied progressively to determine the minimum load required for the stylus to cut through the coating to the substrate or cause visible surface damage. This instrument is suitable for quality control laboratories, coating R&D, coated panel evaluation, paint formulation testing, and test methods according to ASTM D2197, ASTM D2248, ASTM D2454, and ASTM D5178.
